26.19 That Was Unexpected

Tonight, Seoul face a Gyeongju team with 5 wins and a draw from their last six matches. But as I’ve now learned, form means nothing when Seoul are playing. Still, I expect to see Gyeongju win tonight.

Back Home

Seoul missed a great opportunity to strengthen their league position when they visited an out-of-form Mungyeong. I watched that match online while on holiday, having only returned to Korea yesterday afternoon. During the journey home, I crossed seven time zones and slept very little. I managed to get a full night’s sleep last night, but I’m still tired and jet-lagged, and my concentration isn't what it should be.

Gogga joins me again today. The plan was to get kimbab from inside the main stadium and have a beer outside the GS25 before going to the game, but somehow we arrived later than expected. We are eating at the stadium tonight.

Few Usual Suspects

A few of the usual supporters are here, including a small group of women I’ve seen a few times now. I recognise them because one of them always wears a Manchester City shirt.

There are also shirts hung on the railing again. Initially, I think they’re the same as the ones from the last match, but they’re actually for a different player and from a different supporter. The shirts are for No. 8, Bak Ye-eun. She spent five years playing for Gyeongju before a short stint in the UK with Brighton and Hove Albion, then Hearts of Midlothian. She returned for a year with Incheon before joining Seoul. She has also been a regular in the national team, although you have to wonder if that is still the case now while she’s playing for Seoul.

Speaking of shirts, Incheon Man has news about our replica shirts. Hummel will print them with our chosen names and numbers, and it will cost us only half what you would pay for a shirt from a big team like FC Seoul. He is, of course, at the match tonight. He keeps telling us he’s sick and shouldn’t come, but here he is, again. Legend.

A Pleasant Evening

The temperature is not as stifling as it has been over the last few weeks, and the light breeze blowing through the stadium is delightful. It’s a pleasant evening, and the players dont look as taxed as they’ve been recently.

The match on the field is a fun back and forth, but the Gyeongju attack looks more dangerous. Seoul manages to resist, but I fully expect them to crumble in the final 15 minutes, as is common with struggling teams. Against all expectations, Seoul absorb the Gyeongju attacks and earns a draw. There are a few scary moments, but Gyeongju looked surprisingly tame when it mattered.

Three For One

After the match, the players take off their shoes and sit down in a circle. They eventually get up to thank the supporters, but why on earth they don’t just quickly do it before goofing off is beyond me.

Why does this team seem so generally blasé towards their supporters? As much as I dislike flopping between teams, I can’t help but wonder if I would have been better off supporting Suwon this season. It takes to Suwon as it does to Seoul, and they actually seem to appreciate people turning up every week to watch them. I am seriously considering changing teams next season.

With the post-match meeting complete, they pose for a team photo and a small ceremony for three players: No. 18 Kim Jeong-mi, No. 26 Im Seon-ju and No. 27 Lee Chae-yun. I don’t recall any announcement about the celebration, and I only learned about it when the team posted the photos on Instagram a few days later.

At first, I’m confused about why Kim Jeong-mi, who has been playing for more than 20 years, has only 350 appearances. Then I remember that goalkeepers often spend their first few seasons sitting on the sideline, watching the first-choice keeper do all the work.

Interestingly, all three players joined Seoul from Incheon this season.

Out In The Mountains

The following week, Seoul travelled to Hwacheon, a team arguably even stronger than Gyeongju. Their recent record is similar to Geongju, though.

Hwacheon controlled the game for most of the 90 minutes. But Seoul held on and even managed a few shots on target. The star of the match was definitely goalkeeper Kim Jeong-mi. She was diving and blocking like a boss, generally just being a wall in front of the goal and preventing Hwacheon from getting the victory everyone expected. She definitely deserved her inclusion in the Round 21 Queen of the Week voting.

26.19 그건 예상치 못했어요

오늘 밤 서울은 최근 6경기에서 5승 1무를 기록한 경주 팀과 맞붙는다. 하지만 이제 내가 알게 된 것처럼, 서울이 경기를 할 때는 형태가 아무 의미도 없다. 그래도 오늘 밤 경주가 이길 거라고 기대합니다.

집으로 돌아가기

서울은 컨디션이 좋지 않은 문경을 방문했을 때 리그 내 입지를 강화할 절호의 기회를 놓쳤다. 나는 휴가 중에 그 경기를 온라인으로 봤고, 어제 오후에야 한국에 돌아왔다. 집으로 가는 길에 나는 7개의 시간대를 넘나들었고 잠을 거의 자지 못했다. 어젯밤에 겨우 밤새 푹 잤지만, 아직도 피곤하고 시차증이 심하며 집중도 제대로 되지 않아요.

고가는 오늘 다시 나와 함께한다. 계획은 메인 경기장 안에서 킴밥을 사고 GS25 밖에서 맥주를 마신 뒤 경기에 가는 것이었지만, 어쩐지 우리는 예상보다 늦게 도착했다. 우리는 오늘 밤 경기장에서 식사하고 있어요.

몇몇 흔한 용의자들

여기에는 흔히 볼 수 있는 지지자 몇 명이 있는데, 그중에는 제가 지금까지 몇 번 본 적 있는 소수의 여성들도 포함되어 있습니다. 그들 중 한 명이 항상 맨체스터 시티 셔츠를 입어서 나는 그들을 알아본다.

기분 좋은 저녁

기온이 지난 몇 주 동안처럼 숨 막히지는 않고, 경기장을 스치는 산들바람이 기분 좋다. 기분 좋은 저녁이고, 선수들은 최근에 그랬던 것만큼 피곤해 보이지 않는다.

필드 위의 경기는 재미있는 주고받기지만, 경주의 공격은 더 위험해 보인다. 서울은 끝까지 버티지만, 힘겨워하는 팀들에서 흔히 그렇듯 마지막 15분에는 무너질 것으로 충분히 예상합니다. 모든 예상과 달리 서울은 경주의 공격을 받아내고 무승부를 거둔다. 몇몇 무서운 순간들이 있었지만, 중요한 순간에 경주는 놀라울 정도로 온순해 보였다.

하나에 세 개

경기 후에 선수들은 신발을 벗고 원을 이루어 앉습니다. 그들은 결국 지지자들에게 감사 인사를 하려고 일어나지만, 장난치기 전에 왜 그렇게 빨리 하지 않는지는 이해가 안 돼요.

왜 이 팀은 지지자들에게 대체로 무덤덤한 태도를 보이는 것처럼 보일까? 팀을 왔다 갔다 하는 걸 싫어하지만, 이번 시즌에 수원을 지원했더라면 더 나았을지 모른다는 생각을 지울 수가 없다. 수원도 서울만큼 시간이 걸리는데, 오히려 사람들이 매주 찾아와서 구경해 주는 걸 고마워하는 것 같아요. 나는 다음 시즌에 팀을 바꾸는 것을 진지하게 고려하고 있다.

경기 후 회식이 끝난 뒤, 선수들은 팀 사진 촬영과 함께 18번 김정미, 26번 임선주, 27번 이채윤 세 선수를 위한 작은 기념식을 가졌습니다. 그 기념 행사에 대한 어떤 발표도 기억나지 않고, 며칠 뒤 팀이 인스타그램에 사진을 올렸을 때에야 그 사실을 알게 되었습니다.

처음에는 20년 넘게 연기해 온 김정미가 왜 출연 분량이 겨우 350회뿐인지 혼란스러웠다. 그런데 골키퍼들은 보통 첫 몇 시즌 동안 사이드라인에 앉아 1순위 골키퍼가 모든 일을 하는 모습을 지켜보는 경우가 많다는 걸 떠올렸어요.

흥미롭게도, 이번 시즌에 세 명의 선수 모두 인천에서 서울로 이적했다.

산속에서

그 다음 주, 서울은 경주보다 더 강력하다고 할 수 있는 팀인 화천으로 이동했다. 그들의 최근 기록은 경주와 비슷합니다만.

화천은 90분의 대부분 동안 경기를 지배했다. 하지만 서울은 버텼고 몇 차례 유효 슛도 성공시켰다. 경기의 스타는 확실히 골키퍼 김정미였다. 그녀는 다이빙과 블로킹을 보스처럼 해냈지만, 대체로 골문 앞에서 벽 역할만 하며 모두가 기대한 화천의 승리를 막았다. 그녀는 분명히 라운드 21 주간 퀸 투표에 포함될 자격이 있었다.

Gangjin Come to Seoul

Gangjin Swans arrive in Seoul in poor form. They have picked up just four points from their last ten matches, making this one of Seoul's better chances to collect three points.

That is easier said than done. Seoul are still dealing with a growing injury list, made even worse by one player serving a suspension. Even the reserve goalkeeper remains unavailable, although I still do not know exactly what her injury is. Some players are even playing through injuries that would normally keep them off the field. Number 23, for example, is reported to be carrying some kind of pelvic injury.

The summer heat is not helping either. Every match seems to demand a little more from already exhausted players. We are only just past the halfway point of the season, and I find myself wondering how Seoul will keep putting full teams on the pitch until the final round.

At least it probably will not become as desperate as the old fourth-tier men's side, Seoul Martyrs, who once arrived at a match with only eight players and lost 25–0.

Dinner at Mangwon Market

One of the nice things about the summer schedule is the late kick-off. Instead of rushing straight to the stadium, there is time to enjoy nearby attractions. Today that means Mangwon Market.

Although it is a popular destination, it feels more like a local attraction than a place filled with international tourists. Like many popular traditional markets, food is the main attraction. We wander past stalls selling fried chicken, sausages and all kinds of snacks before settling on a restaurant famous for its wide selection of makgeolli.

It is essentially a bunsik restaurant for adults. The menu includes quick noodle dishes, stuffed peppers and tteokbokki, all served alongside one of Korea's best traditional drinks.

We order shrimp jeon and stuffed chillies, along with the house speciality, a drink they call Cream Makgeolli. It is smooth and easy to drink, making it perfect for someone trying makgeolli for the first time. For me, though, it tastes a little watered down. Premium brands like Haechang are just as creamy while keeping a much richer flavour, although they also come with a much higher price tag.

Shirt Collectors

After dinner we make the short trip to the stadium. Plenty of supporters are already in the stands, and one thing immediately catches my attention. The Gangjin supporters occupy almost as much of the stand as the Seoul supporters.

Part of that is probably because this side of the stadium is where most people enter, and curious spectators normally end up there. Still, there seem to be far more Gangjin fans than I expected. There are almost as many here as I saw when I visited Gangjin itself. Surely they have not travelled all this way together?

The group of young women usually seated near me is missing today, but two new faces quickly grab my attention.

One supporter is sitting on the far side of the stand with two Number 18 shirts hanging over the railing. Another man is sitting much closer to us with an incredible collection of shirts. He has around eight in total, all belonging to the same player, number 18 Kim Yeong-Mi, all shorts from her time at Incheon and the national team, all fully or partially signed. Most interestingly, there is a Seoul City Hall shirt.

I might not be the most outgoing person, but when there is something worth gaining, I have no problem introducing myself. I head over and ask where he managed to buy the Seoul shirt.

He tells me he bought it directly through the club's kit supplier, Hummel.

Our friend from Incheon notices the conversation and joins us. Since he speaks Korean, he is able to ask far more detailed questions than I can. By the end of the conversation, we have learned that there is a genuine chance of ordering our own customised Seoul City Hall shirts before the season finishes.

Even better, Seoul keeps the same shirt design from year to year, so anything we buy now should still match the team's kit next season.

This alone almost makes today's match worthwhile.

A Scrappy Match

The football itself never quite reaches the same standard.

Both teams look evenly matched during the opening half, although Seoul appears slightly stronger. Possession changes hands regularly, but neither side can string together enough accurate passes to build sustained attacks. Every promising move seems to break down because passes are just a little off target.

It feels like this match will be decided by whichever team can put together two or three good passes at the right moment.

Gangjin strikes first. A well-weighted through ball splits the defence before being calmly finished between the goalkeeper and the near post. It is an excellent goal, and I suspect I am not the only Seoul supporter wondering if another frustrating evening is about to unfold.

Fortunately, Seoul responds before the break.

Number two, Bin Hye-Jin, delivers an excellent ball into the penalty area. The scramble that follows is chaotic, but Han Chae-rin emerges out of the mess and finds herself with an empty goal to aim at. She simply taps the ball home to level the score. It is one of several dangerous deliveries from Bin Hye-Jin during the evening.

Seoul Finish Strong

The second half continues much like the first. Both teams work hard, but accurate passing remains elusive. Chances are few and the game drifts towards what looks like a draw.

Then, around the 80th minute, a corner changes everything.

The ball glances off a Seoul player's head before striking the hanging hand of a Gangjin defender. It is an unfortunate incident more than a careless one, but the referee has little choice but to award a penalty.

Seoul converts the spot kick to take the lead.

Deep into stoppage time comes the final moment of the evening. Number 15, Gang Yu-Mi, tries to lob the ball over the goalkeeper from outside the box, only to see her effort bounce against the crossbar. Luckily for Seoul, the rebound falls perfectly for Jo Yae-Son, who calmly finishes into the open net to seal a 3–1 victory. Great work by the two substitutes.

More Than Three Points

The result is exactly what Seoul needs, but the football itself is only average. Both teams struggle to find any rhythm, and neither ever looks particularly convincing.

When I think back on the day, though, the match is not what stands out most.

Instead, I keep thinking about that conversation in the stands and the possibility that, before the season ends, I might finally have my own customised Seoul City Hall shirt.

망원시장에서 저녁 먹기

여름 일정의 좋은 점 중 하나는 늦은 시작이다. 경기장으로 바로 서두르지 않아도, 근처 명소들을 즐길 시간이 있습니다. 오늘날 그것은 망원시장을 의미합니다.

인기 있는 여행지이긴 하지만, 국제 관광객들로 가득한 곳이라기보다는 지역 명소에 더 가깝게 느껴진다. 많은 인기 있는 전통 시장들처럼, 음식이 가장 큰 볼거리입니다. 우리는 치킨, 소시지, 온갖 종류의 간식을 파는 노점들을 지나 마글리 종류가 다양하기로 유명한 식당에 들어섰다.

본질적으로 성인들을 위한 분식집입니다. 메뉴에는 빠르게 먹을 수 있는 면 요리, 고추장아찌, 그리고 떡볶이가 포함되어 있으며, 모두 한국 최고의 전통 음료 중 하나와 함께 제공됩니다.

저희는 새우전과 고추장조림, 그리고 가게 대표 메뉴인 크림막걸리라는 음료를 주문했습니다. 부드럽고 마시기 쉬워서 막걸리를 처음 시도하는 사람에게 딱 맞습니다. 하지만 나에게는 조금 묽게 느껴진다. 해창 같은 프리미엄 브랜드는 훨씬 더 진한 맛을 유지하면서도 크리미한 편이고, 가격도 훨씬 비쌉니다.

셔츠 수집가들

저녁 식사 후에 우리는 짧게 경기장까지 간다. 이미 많은 지지자들이 관중석에 서 있고, 한 가지가 즉시 내 관심을 끈다. 강진 지지자들은 서울 지지자들만큼이나 거의 그만큼의 좌석을 차지하고 있다.

아마도 경기장 이쪽이 대부분의 사람들이 들어오는 곳이고, 호기심 많은 관중들이 보통 그쪽으로 몰리기 때문일 겁니다. 그래도 강진 팬이 내가 예상했던 것보다 훨씬 많은 것 같다. 강진 자체를 방문했을 때 본 것만큼이나 여기에도 거의 그만큼 많이 있습니다. 분명 그들이 이렇게까지 함께 여행한 적은 없겠죠?

보통 내 옆에 앉아 있던 젊은 여성 무리가 오늘은 없지만, 두 명의 새로운 얼굴이 금세 내 시선을 사로잡는다.

한 지지자가 스탠드 반대편에 앉아 난간 위로 18번 셔츠 두 장을 걸고 있다. 다른 남자가 우리와 훨씬 더 가까이 앉아 있으며, 믿을 수 없을 만큼 많은 셔츠를 가지고 있다. 그는 총 여덟 벌 정도를 가지고 있는데, 모두 같은 선수인 18번 김영미의 인천과 국가대표 시절 반바지들로, 모두 완전히 또는 부분적으로 사인이 되어 있습니다. 가장 흥미로운 것은 서울시청 셔츠가 있다는 것이다.

나는 가장 외향적인 사람은 아닐지 몰라도, 얻을 가치가 있는 무언가가 있을 때는 나 자신을 소개하는 데 전혀 문제가 없다. 나는 가서 그가 어떻게 서울 셔츠를 샀는지 물어본다.

그는 클럽의 장비 공급업체인 Hummel을 통해 직접 그것을 샀다고 내게 말했다.

양 팀은 전반전 동안 팽팽한 대결을 펼치지만, 서울이 약간 더 강해 보입니다. 볼 점유율은 자주 바뀌지만, 어느 쪽도 충분히 정확한 패스를 이어 붙여 지속적인 공격을 만들지 못한다. 유망해 보이는 모든 움직임이 패스가 조금만 타깃에서 벗어나서 무너지는 것 같다.

이 경기는 적절한 순간에 두세 번의 좋은 패스를 연결할 수 있는 팀이 승부를 가를 것 같은 느낌이다.

강진이 먼저 친다. 적절한 강약 조절이 된 스루 패스는 수비를 분산시키고, 골키퍼와 가까운 포스트 사이에서 침착하게 마무리됩니다. 그것은 훌륭한 목표이며, 또 다른 답답한 저녁이 펼쳐질지 고민하는 서울 지지자가 나뿐만은 아닐 거라고 생각한다.

다행히도, 서울은 휴가 전에 대답한다.

정지 시간의 깊은 곳에서 저녁의 마지막 순간이 찾아온다. 15번 강유미는 박스 밖에서 골키퍼를 넘어가려고 공을 띄우려 했지만, 공이 크로스바에 맞고 튕겨 나왔다. 다행히 서울은 반격에 실패했고, 조예성이 침착하게 오픈 네트에 몸을 던져 3-1 승리를 확정지었습니다. 두 명의 대체자들의 훌륭한 일.

3점 이상

결과는 서울이 필요로 하는 바로 그 것이지만, 축구 자체는 그저 평균적일 뿐이다. 두 팀 모두 리듬을 찾는 데 애를 쓰고, 어느 쪽도 특별히 설득력 있어 보이지 않습니다.

하지만 그날을 되돌아보면, 가장 눈에 띄는 건 경기 자체가 아니에요.

대신 나는 관중석에서 나눈 그 대화와 시즌이 끝나기 전에 드디어 나만의 맞춤형 서울시청 티셔츠를 가질 수 있을지도 모른다는 가능성을 계속 생각한다.
