26.20 Mount Suwon

A Steep Hill

This will possibly be my last away match of the season, and Seoul has another difficult one tonight.

Today, Seoul makes the short hop over to Suwon to face the team currently running away with the league.

Suwon FC Women have been doing well all season, but since the Champions League final, they have been on a tear. Across all competitions, they have played 16 matches in total, losing just one and drawing two. Going into this match, they are nine points ahead of Hwacheon in second place and 21 points ahead of Gyeongju and Mungyeong in third and fourth.

The Journey to Suwon

The trip to Suwon is not a long one, but it can be annoying.

I use the bus to get to Suwon, which means possibly waiting outside for long stretches. The worst of summer is over, so the heat is no longer a major problem, but the transfer stop is still next to a busy, exhaust-fume-saturated road connecting Anyang to Suwon. And depending on which bus I board there, I might have to stand for a good 30 minutes on a packed bus, swinging back and forth, left and right.

Gogga is joining me again. The main selling point this time is that there are tons of restaurants in the area. We cannot drink beer because we have to go for a medical check-up tomorrow, but she is okay with that. Her choice of dinner today is… SALADY!

It has been a while since we have been there. It is not the most substantial meal, but I will never say no to a good salad.

The Return of an Old Extra Character

After dinner, we have a bit of time, and we decide to visit a perpetual extra character: HomePlus.

As a reminder, the retailer has been through tough times, struggling to fill shelves and pay suppliers. I have not seen the Seoul World Cup Stadium branch since they reopened, but I assume all the branches are operating similarly right now.

The shelves are no longer stocked with just a single type of item, and suppliers seem willing to give them another chance. The alcohol section at this branch, at least, has a small selection of makgeolli and beer instead of just one brand of alcohol-free beer. It is a strange thing to comment on, but it feels reassuring. And maybe I will be able to watch the next home match with some makgeolli again!

Everything feels condensed, though, as the store consolidated limited supplies onto one floor. It is not bad, but now it feels like any other single-floor hypermarket rather than the big E-Mart competitor.

The “Cheese Section” is stocked with soju, and a few of the fridges are being used to display kitchenware. There is clearly still some work to be done here. Still, it is much better than the HomePlus of a few months ago, and despite the odd layout, everything feels more sustainable.

In the food court, most of the restaurants seem to be closed, which is odd considering it is Friday evening. I wonder if they are still in business.

We grab some cold water and a small snack before we make our way towards the stadium.

A Proper Match-Day Experience

Suwon FC Women charges an entry fee.

It is only 5,000 won, and it makes sense because they market themselves as “One Team”, with a professional men’s squad and an effectively professional women’s squad.

With this professionalism, you get a club shop that is open before the game and a refreshment stand inside the stadium that remains open during the match.

We also get what looks like a souvenir ticket and a cooling patch. Both are cheap little additions, but they add value to the ticket price and help make the match feel like an event.

The seating arrangements are also a little different from the opening match I attended here. This time, we enter on the ground floor and are funnelled to either side through the tabled seating section. On the Suwon side, there are at least five times as many tables, and most of the supporters sit there.

On the Seoul side, there are maybe 12 tables, and it is not immediately clear whether we are allowed to sit there. Most people simply walk past them towards the normal seats.

After setting up my banner, upside down by mistake, I head over to the Suwon side to see if I can get some photos of the fans and maybe a signed ball.

The team does not throw balls into the crowd today. Boo! And the fans are slow to get started, leaving me standing around like a lost tourist. They need to take some lessons from their men’s supporters or their neighbours, the Bluewings, who start chanting well before the match begins.

An Unexpected Guest in the Seoul Section

On my way back, I notice someone sitting in the table section on the Seoul side. She looks familiar, maybe a player, but I cannot place her. I later realise that it is number 7, Han Chae-rin. I assume she is injured, but I am not about to walk up to her and ask.

Once we realise that we are allowed to sit at the tables, we move over and make ourselves comfortable a few tables away from her.

The Seoul side is quite empty tonight, so she is the only person of real interest in our immediate vicinity. And sitting near her turns out to be quite amusing.

As an actual squad member, she is much more invested in the action on the field than we are. No one can hear her, but she spends the entire match giving instructions to the players, jumping up whenever something interesting happens and generally behaving like a very well-informed supporter.

Seoul Takes the Lead

On the field, Suwon always looks like the stronger team. Their passing is better, their runs are better, and they have the territorial advantage for most of the match.

But Seoul scores first, just before half-time.

The goalkeeper launches a massive kick across the field. It bounces, and a defender tries to head it out of the box. It does not go far.

Kim Min-ji gets to the ball first and lobs it towards goal, where it hits the crossbar. The ball bounces back into the field, and captain Gang Tae-gyeong is there to smash it into the net.

Against all expectations, Seoul leads. The substitutes, who are busy warming up, celebrate by forming a circle and jumping together, making the whole circle spin as if they are playing Ring-a-rosies.

I manage to get a photo, but I really wish I had my phone ready to capture it on video.

The Main Talking Point

The main talking point of the match actually comes earlier, after Ji So-yeon receives a yellow card.

From where we are sitting, it is not clear what happens. Watching the match online later helped fill in the gaps.

In the broadcast, you can see Ji So-yeon talking to the referee. The referee stops, and as she turns around, she is already reaching into her pocket. At the same time, Ji So-yeon appears to put a finger to her lips, seemingly telling the referee to keep quiet as the yellow card comes out.

Ji So-yeon immediately walks towards her bench, shaking her finger and seemingly indicating that she will not accept the decision.

And from there, things only get more heated.

You can see her talking to the coaches, presumably explaining the situation. The referee follows her and speaks to the coaches as well, while Ji So-yeon appears to become angrier by the second.

Most of the players are staying clear of whatever is happening.

Interestingly, at one point during the argument, Seoul’s Im Seon-ju comes over and tries to calm Ji So-yeon. I suppose they know each other well after playing so many national team matches together. But it does not help.

Eventually Ji So-yeon becomes so angry that, after speaking to the fourth referee, she turns around and throws a bottle of water onto the ground.

The referee immediately pulls out a red card. But three Suwon players step between her and Ji So-yeon, apparently trying to calm the referee down.

I have a feeling the card was never more than a threat, but who knows?

My Rugby Brain

Now, I come from a rugby background, and my immediate feeling is that, no matter what the referee has done, you need to back off. She has made her decision, and she is not going to change it.

Stopping the game for five minutes to scream at the referees is not on. Let it go and make an official complaint after the match.

The next day, though, we learn what had happened. I believe it is the main referee who, while talking to another referee over their communication system, said that Ji So-yeon’s reaction to something on the field was possibly because she was on her period.

Maybe that is funny when you are at home talking to friends who understand your sense of humour. It is definitely unprofessional when you are a referee officiating a match.

After reading this and watching the replay, I definitely have sympathy for the way Ji So-yeon reacted.

I still feel that she should have backed off much earlier, but I also have a feeling that, if it were me, I would have thrown the bottle not on the ground but at the referee.

I do not doubt that Suwon filed an official complaint, but we later learn that Seoul filed one. For what it’s worth, I do not think the referee should be fired, but there should be some sort of disciplinary action.

Suwon Comes Back

Back to the football.

In the second half, Suwon keeps up the pressure, which eventually pays off, and they score two goals before the final whistle.

Honestly, I never thought that a single goal was going to be enough for Seoul to beat a team as strong as Suwon.

Seoul put up a good fight, but Suwon’s quality eventually shows.

The Long Walk Away

After the match, Seoul forms their usual huddle on the pitch while the Suwon players go to thank their supporters.

When the Seoul players finish, though, they grab their gear and walk off in dribs and drabs.

A few players wave to friends who have come to watch, but apart from that, they completely ignore the tiny group of travelling supporters.

And that is where the frustration from the previous match comes back.

I am still kind of pissed off about what happened then. I remember other occasions this season when something similar has happened too. I have spent much of this year travelling to matches, making plans around kick-off times, standing at bus stops, sitting through uncomfortable journeys and finding ways to make an entire day out of following Seoul. These are the things that create memories.

Now, the team does not owe me anything for that, but just the simple act of saying “Thank you for your support today.” means so much to fans.

I committed to supporting Seoul this season, and I intend to see that commitment through. This season has already become a much bigger story than simply whether Seoul wins or loses. It has become a story about following the team around Korea and seeing what happens along the way.

But commitment and support are a strange thing. We spend time and money to make the journeys, and we come back even when the team loses. The only thing that matters is that we enjoy ourselves.

What is harder to deal with is when the team does not seem to care whether or not we are in the stands. That starts eating away at the overall enjoyment.

Maybe I am expecting too much. Or maybe, by the end of the season, I will decide that I have done what I set out to do and choose a new team.

For now, though, I pack away the banner, leave the stadium and start the journey home, already checking when the next match will be.

가파른 언덕

이번 경기가 아마도 이번 시즌 마지막 원정 경기가 될 것이고, 서울은 오늘 밤 또 다른 힘든 경기를 치릅니다. 오늘 서울은 현재 리그에서 도망치고 있는 팀을 상대하기 위해 잠시 수원으로 이동합니다. 수원 FC 여자팀은 시즌 내내 좋은 성적을 내고 있지만, 챔피언스리그 결승 이후로는 더욱 좋은 흐름을 이어가고 있습니다. 모든 대회를 통틀어 총 16경기를 치렀고, 그중 단 한 경기만 패했으며 두 경기는 무승부를 기록했습니다. 이번 경기에서 그들은 2위인 화천보다 9점 앞서고, 3위와 4위인 경주와 문경보다 21점 앞서 있습니다.

수원으로의 여정

저는 수원에 가기 위해 버스를 타는데, 그 때문에 오랫동안 밖에서 기다려야 할 수도 있어요. 여름의 가장 힘든 시기는 지나갔고, 더위도 더 이상 큰 문제가 아니지만, 환승 정류장은 여전히 안양과 수원을 잇는 배기가스가 가득한 붐비는 도로 옆에 있습니다. 그리고 내가 타는 버스에 따라, 꽉 찬 버스에서 30분 정도 서서 좌우로 왔다 갔다 해야 할 수도 있어요.

고가는 다시 나와 함께하고 있어. 이번에 가장 큰 판매 포인트는 그 지역에 수많은 식당이 있다는 점입니다. 우리는 내일 건강 검진을 받아야 해서 맥주를 마실 수 없지만, 그녀는 그에 대해 괜찮아한다. 그녀가 오늘 저녁으로 고른 것은… 샐러드!

우리가 그곳에 간 지 꽤 시간이 지났어요. 그것이 가장 푸짐한 식사는 아니지만, 나는 좋은 샐러드에 절대 거절하지 않을 것이다.

옛날의 특별한 인물의 귀환

저녁 식사 후에 잠깐 시간이 있어서, 우리는 영원한 추가 문자를 방문하기로 했어요: 홈플러스.

참고로, 그 소매업체는 힘든 시기를 겪으며 매장 채우기와 공급업체에 대금을 지불하는 데 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 나는 서울 월드컵 경기장 지점이 재개장한 이후로 본 적이 없지만, 지금은 모든 지점이 비슷하게 운영되고 있다고 생각한다.

선반에는 더 이상 한 가지 종류의 물건만 진열되어 있지 않고, 공급업체들도 그들에게 다시 기회를 주려는 듯합니다. 이 지점의 주류 코너에는 적어도 한 가지 무알코올 맥주 브랜드만 있는 게 아니라, 마글리와 맥주가 소량 구비되어 있습니다. 이에 대해 언급하는 것은 이상한 일이지만, 안심이 된다. 아마 다음 홈 경기를 다시 마케올리와 함께 볼 수 있을지도 몰라!

하지만 매장이 제한된 재고를 한 층에 집중시키면서 모든 것이 압축된 느낌이다. 나쁘지는 않지만, 이제는 대형 이마트 경쟁자라기보다는 다른 단일 층짜리 대형마트처럼 느껴집니다.

"치즈 코너"에는 소주가 가득하고, 몇몇 냉장고는 주방용품을 진열하는 데 사용되고 있다. 여기에는 분명히 아직 해야 할 일이 남아 있다. 그래도 몇 달 전 홈플러스보다는 훨씬 낫고, 다소 독특한 배치임에도 불구하고 전체적으로 더 지속 가능해 보입니다.

푸드코트에서는 대부분의 식당이 문을 닫은 것 같아, 금요일 저녁이라는 점을 생각하면 이상하다. 그들이 아직도 영업 중인지 궁금하네요.

우리는 경기장으로 향하기 전에 차가운 물과 간단한 간식을 챙긴다.

완벽한 경기 당일 경험

수원 FC 여자팀은 입장료를 받는다.

가격이 겨우 5,000원이라서 이해가 가는데, 그들이 '원 팀'이라는 이름으로 남자 프로팀과 사실상 프로 수준의 여자팀을 내세우기 때문입니다.

이런 전문성 덕분에 경기 전부터 문을 여는 클럽 샵과 경기 중에도 운영되는 경기장 내 음료 판매대를 갖추게 됩니다.

우리는 기념 티켓처럼 보이는 것과 냉각 패치도 받습니다. 둘 다 저렴한 작은 추가 요소지만, 티켓 가격에 가치를 더하고 당첨 결과가 마치 큰 이벤트처럼 느껴지게 합니다.

좌석 배치도 내가 여기서 본 개막 경기와는 조금 다르다. 이번에는 1층으로 들어가서 테이블 좌석 구역을 통해 양쪽으로 안내받습니다. 수원 쪽에는 테이블이 최소 다섯 배는 더 많고, 대부분의 지지자들이 그곳에 앉아 있습니다.

서울 쪽에는 아마도 12개의 테이블이 있는데, 우리가 거기 앉아도 되는지는 바로 알 수 없습니다. 대부분의 사람들은 그냥 그들을 지나쳐 일반 좌석 쪽으로 걸어갑니다.

배너를 실수로 거꾸로 설치한 뒤, 부채 사진과 사인된 공을 찍을 수 있을까 해서 수원 쪽으로 향했습니다.

그 팀은 오늘 관중에게 공을 던지지 않는다. 아, 젠장! 그리고 팬들이 시작이 너무 늦어서 나는 마치 길 잃은 관광객처럼 서 있게 됐어. 그들은 경기 시작 훨씬 전에 구호를 외치기 시작하는 남자팀의 응원자들이나 이웃인 블루윙스에게서 배울 점이 있다.

서울 구역에 나타난 뜻밖의 손님

돌아오는 길에 나는 서울 쪽 테이블 구역에 앉아 있는 사람을 눈치챘다. 그녀는 익숙해 보여요, 아마 선수일지도 모르지만, 나는 그녀를 배치할 수 없어요. 나중에 그것이 7번, 한채린이라는 것을 알게 되었다. 그녀가 다친 것 같지만, 나는 그녀에게 다가가서 물어볼 생각은 없다.

우리가 테이블에 앉아도 된다는 걸 알게 되자, 우리는 옆으로 비켜서 그녀로부터 몇 테이블 떨어진 곳에 편안히 자리를 잡았다.

오늘 밤 서울 쪽은 꽤 한산해서, 그녀가 우리 바로 근처에서 유일하게 관심을 받는 사람이다. 그리고 그녀 곁에 앉아 있는 것이 꽤 재미있다는 것이 밝혀졌다.

실제 팀원으로서 그녀는 우리보다 경기장에서의 행동에 훨씬 더 몰두하고 있다. 아무도 그녀의 말을 듣지 못하지만, 경기 내내 선수들에게 지시를 내리고, 흥미로운 일이 생기면 벌떡 일어나며, 대체로 매우 박식한 팬처럼 행동합니다.

서울이 선두에 서다

경기장에서는 수원이 항상 더 강한 팀처럼 보인다. 그들의 패스는 더 좋고, 그들의 달리기도 더 뛰어나며, 경기 대부분에서 영토 우위를 가지고 있다.

하지만 서울이 전반 종료 직전에 1점을 얻었다.

골키퍼가 필드를 가로질러 거대한 킥을 날렸다. 공이 튀어 오르고, 수비수가 그것을 상자 밖으로 헤딩하려고 합니다. 그것은 멀리 가지 않는다.

김민지가 먼저 공에 도달해 골문 쪽으로 로빙했고, 공은 크로스바를 맞았다. 공이 다시 경기장으로 튕겨 나가고, 강태경 주장이 그 공을 네트에 쳐 넣으려 하고 있다.

결국 지소연은 너무 화가 나서 네 번째 심판과 이야기를 나눈 뒤, 돌아서서 물병을 땅에 던집니다.

저는 럭비 출신인데, 심판이 뭐라고 하든 당신은 물러나야 한다는 게 제 직감입니다. 그녀는 결정을 내렸고, 그것을 바꾸지 않을 것이다.

5분 동안 경기를 멈추고 심판에게 소리치는 것은 허용되지 않는다. 그만두고 경기 후에 공식적으로 불만을 제기하세요.

하지만 다음 날, 우리는 무슨 일이 있었는지 알게 된다. 저는 주심이 다른 심판과 통신 시스템으로 대화하던 중, 지소연이 경기 중 어떤 상황에 반응한 것이 아마도 생리 중이었기 때문이라고 말했다고 생각합니다.

아마도 집에서 당신의 유머 감각을 이해하는 친구들과 이야기할 때는 그게 웃길지도 몰라요. 경기 심판을 맡고 있을 때는 확실히 전문적이지 못합니다.

이 글을 읽고 다시 보니, 지소연이 반응한 방식에 분명히 공감이 갑니다.

나는 그녀가 훨씬 일찍 물러났어야 했다고 아직도 생각하지만, 만약 내가 그 상황이라면 병을 바닥에 버리지 않고 심판에게 던졌을 것 같다는 느낌도 든다.

수원이 공식적으로 고소장을 제출한 것은 의심하지 않지만, 나중에 서울이 고소장을 제출했다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그 점을 감안하더라도, 심판을 해고해서는 안 된다고 생각하지만, 어떤 형태로든 징계 조치가 있어야 한다고 봅니다.

수원이 돌아오다

미식축구로 돌아가자.

후반전에도 수원은 계속 압박을 이어갔고, 결국 그 노력은 결실을 맺어 경기 종료 직전에 두 골을 넣었습니다.

솔직히 말해서, 서울이 수원처럼 강한 팀을 이길 수 있을 만큼 단 하나의 목표만으로는 충분할 거라고는 생각하지 못했어요.

서울은 잘 버텼지만, 수원의 품질은 결국 드러난다.

긴 여정

경기 후 서울은 경기장에 늘 하던 대로 모이고, 수원 선수들은 팬들에게 감사 인사를 하러 간다.

하지만 서울 선수들이 끝나자 그들은 장비를 챙겨 들고 흐느적거리며 자리를 떠났다.

몇몇 선수들은 구경하러 온 친구들에게 손을 흔들지만, 그 외에는 이동하는 소수의 응원단을 완전히 무시한다.

그리고 바로 그 지점에서 이전 경기의 좌절감이 다시 돌아옵니다.

그때 일어난 일에 아직도 좀 화가 나 있어. 이번 시즌에 비슷한 일이 있었던 다른 경우들도 기억합니다. 올해 대부분을 경기장으로 이동하고, 킥오프 시간에 맞춰 계획을 세우며, 버스 정류장에 서 있고, 불편한 이동을 견디면서 서울을 따라다니며 하루를 보내는 데 보냈습니다. 이것들은 기억을 만드는 것들입니다.

물론 팀이 저에게 빚진 건 없지만, 오늘 응원해 주셔서 감사하다는 말 한마디가 팬들에게는 정말 큰 의미가 있습니다.

이번 시즌에 서울을 지원하기로 약속했으며, 그 약속을 반드시 실천할 계획입니다. 이번 시즌은 단순히 서울이 이기고 지는 문제를 넘어 훨씬 더 큰 이야기가 되었습니다. 이 이야기는 한국 전역을 돌며 그 과정에서 벌어지는 일들을 따라가는 이야기가 되었습니다.

하지만 헌신과 지지는 이상한 것이다. 우리는 여행을 위해 시간과 돈을 쓰고, 팀이 지더라도 돌아옵니다. 중요한 건 우리가 즐거워하는 거예요.

더 다루기 힘든 건, 팀이 우리가 관중석에 있든 없든 신경 쓰지 않는 것처럼 보일 때입니다. 그것이 전체적인 즐거움을 갉아먹기 시작합니다.

아마 내가 너무 많이 기대하고 있는 걸지도 몰라. 아니면 시즌이 끝날 때쯤 내가 하려던 일을 해냈다고 생각하고 새 팀을 선택할지도 몰라요.

하지만 지금은 배너를 치우고 경기장을 떠나 집으로 가는 길을 시작하며, 벌써 다음 경기가 언제인지 확인하고 있다.
